Links Gustav & Hanna Survivors To Emergency Housing
ATLANTA, GA – August 31:
As New Orleans residents began the mandatory evacuation of
their city for the second time in three years,
HurricaneHousingSearch.org, established in the immediate aftermath of
Hurricane Katrina, is once again offering a free service connecting
victims of Hurricane Gustav & Hanna and public service
organizations with homeowners volunteering to provide free shelter.
Organized by
state, HurricaneHousingSearch.org offers a simple way for homeowners to
list their available space and for individual survivors, FEMA officials,
Red Cross directors, and other care providers to access them.
"We
established HurricaneHousingSearch.org in 2005 to help the hundreds of
thousands of families who were made homeless by Hurricane Katrina,"
said Joel Lesser, CEO of site sponsor Creative NetVentures of Atlanta,
Georgia. "We want those who are being displaced by Hurricane Gustav
and Hanna to know HurricaneHousingSearch.org is still available to help
them locate temporary housing. Finding
such housing is imperative and this site is simply our small way of
contributing to what needs to be an all-out nationwide effort.
With thousands of
residents in the path of Gustav and Hanna being ordered to leave their
homes, state and private emergency services directors have indicated
that the shortage of temporary housing is rapidly becoming more acute
than shortages in such other emergency essentials as food and medical
supplies.
"All of us
who populate cyberspace talk about the 'internet community' so much that
the phrase sometimes has very little meaning," Lesser added. "HurricaneHousingSearch.org
is our ongoing effort to make that concept a reality at critical
moments like these. Moments
when a sense of community -- on and off the internet -- is so
desperately needed. I urge
both homeowners who want to help mitigate this disaster, survivors who
may eventually gain access to a computer, and shelter directors, FEMA
field workers and Red Cross officials to visit and make use of
HurricaneHousingSearch.org."
According to
Lesser, HurricaneHousingSearch.org which is also accessible via
gustavhousing.org and hannahousing.org is being maintained online
permanently to enable "Americans to help other Americans whenever
and wherever disasters forcing people from their homes occur. "
